Actor-turned-politician Vijay delivered a strong political message on Sunday after taking oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and unveiling the first major decisions of his government.
Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Vijay signed three important files — 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers, a special women’s safety force with a dedicated helpline, and a statewide anti-drug mechanism.
Addressing a massive crowd of supporters, Vijay said:
“Nobody should even think that now that we have come to power, we can go on a rampage. There will be only one power centre, that is me.”
From Film Superstar To Chief Minister
Vijay’s oath-taking ceremony reflected a mix of political transition and cinematic spectacle. From early morning, the stadium witnessed huge crowds of TVK workers, film fans and alliance leaders.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended the ceremony along with several prominent political figures. Actor Trisha and members of Vijay’s family were also present at the event.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to Vijay at 10:24 AM.
Attack On Previous Government
After assuming office, Vijay accused the previous DMK government of leaving Tamil Nadu under massive debt. He announced that his administration would soon release a white paper detailing the state’s financial condition.
“The previous government has left us with a debt of Rs 10 lakh crore,” Vijay said.
Focus On Welfare And Women’s Safety
One of the first major announcements by the new government was the promise of 200 units of free electricity for households across the state.
Vijay also announced a special women’s safety force and helpline, while promising a transparent administration that would not “loot public money.”
Coalition Support Secures Majority
The TVK-led alliance secured the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML were among the parties backing the new government.
Vijay must now prove his majority on the Assembly floor before May 13.
A New Political Era In Tamil Nadu?
Tamil Nadu politics has long revolved around the two major Dravidian parties — DMK and AIADMK. However, Vijay’s rise is being viewed as the emergence of a new political force powered by young voters and digital supporters.
At the end of his speech, Vijay said he had entered politics to “repay the debt of gratitude” he owed to the people of Tamil Nadu and promised the beginning of a “new era of secular social justice.”
