As tensions between Iran and Gulf states escalate, the United Arab Emirates appears to be taking concrete steps to shield its critical energy assets from aerial attacks.
Abu Dhabi, May 2026 — Images circulating on social media platform X suggest that the UAE is constructing physical anti-drone barriers around its oil storage facilities in Abu Dhabi. The structures, visible in open-source posts, show iron rod netting encasing what appears to be a petroleum storage site — a setup consistent with counter-UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) defence infrastructure.
The authenticity of the photographs remains unverified by independent sources.
Why UAE Oil Facilities Are in Iran’s Crosshairs
The UAE’s energy sector is not just commercially vital — it is the backbone of the country’s economy. Petroleum and gas contribute nearly 30 percent to the nation’s GDP directly, with another 13 percent coming from hydrocarbon exports. Any sustained attack on these assets would carry severe economic consequences.
Iran has increasingly focused its hostile rhetoric on the Emirates, accusing Abu Dhabi of maintaining and expanding defence and intelligence cooperation with both the United States and Israel. Tehran has pointed to UAE-hosted US military infrastructure as justification for targeting the Gulf state in its broader regional confrontation.
Previous Iranian strikes in the region have hit oil infrastructure, civilian tourism zones, and in at least one reported case, a nuclear-adjacent facility — underlining that no sector is off-limits in Iran’s escalation calculus.
UAE and Israel: A Growing Military Alliance
The drone defence construction comes alongside emerging reports of a deepening UAE-Israel military partnership. According to a report by Middle East Eye citing US officials, the two countries are establishing a bilateral defence fund aimed at jointly financing, acquiring, and developing advanced weapons systems — including air defence platforms and counter-drone technologies.
The agreement reportedly covers joint procurement of Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS), with the UAE potentially co-funding upgrades to Israeli air defence technology.
The deal is said to have been formalised during a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the UAE — a trip that was officially denied by Emirati authorities even after Netanyahu’s office released a statement confirming it.
Iron Dome Batteries Already Deployed
The new defence fund is not the first sign of Israel-UAE military collaboration. In early May, reports emerged that Israel had quietly transferred Iron Dome air defence batteries — complete with trained personnel — to the UAE to bolster its protection against Iranian drone and missile threats. The transfer was reported by Reuters, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.
The Iron Dome system, originally designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery, has been adapted for broader aerial threat scenarios, making it relevant to the kind of UAV attacks Iran has deployed across the region.
UAE Walks a Diplomatic Tightrope
Senior UAE official Anwar Gargash, an adviser to the country’s president, offered a pointed observation in March: Iranian attacks on Arab neighbours were, paradoxically, accelerating the very Israel-Arab security ties that Tehran sought to prevent. His statement suggested the UAE views its Israel partnership not as a liability but as a rational response to a direct threat.
The UAE’s public posture remains carefully managed — it denied Netanyahu’s visit even as evidence of it emerged — but the construction of anti-drone infrastructure and the reported defence agreements suggest that behind closed doors, Abu Dhabi is preparing for a prolonged period of elevated threat.
