India has expressed serious concerns over the ongoing West Asia conflict and its impact on global energy security and maritime stability during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar urged BRICS nations to work together in addressing growing geopolitical uncertainty, sanctions and disruptions to global trade routes, especially through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
Speaking in the presence of Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and UAE Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Jaishankar stressed that stability and peace cannot be selective.
“Safe and unimpeded maritime flows through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, remain vital for global economic well-being,” Jaishankar said.
India Flags Energy Security Concerns
India highlighted that ongoing tensions in West Asia could severely impact oil supplies, shipping routes and the global economy.
Without naming any specific country, Jaishankar emphasized that sovereignty, territorial integrity and diplomacy must remain central to international relations.
He said India is ready to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions and restoring regional stability.
The minister also warned against the growing use of unilateral sanctions and coercive measures, calling for practical cooperation among BRICS nations.
Iran-UAE Differences Surface At BRICS
The meeting also exposed growing differences between Iran and the UAE over recent regional tensions and alleged attacks on energy infrastructure.
According to reports, disagreements between the two sides prevented BRICS from issuing a unified statement on the West Asia crisis.
Sources also claimed that heated exchanges took place between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and UAE representative Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar during closed-door discussions.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reportedly intervened to calm the situation.
Iran Calls For BRICS Support
During his address, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States and Israel of violating international law and urged BRICS nations to openly condemn their actions.
He described Iran as a victim of “illegal expansionism and warmongering” and called on member countries to resist what he called Western dominance.
Iran also asked BRICS nations to support Tehran diplomatically amid growing regional pressure.
PM Modi To Visit UAE
The developments come ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the United Arab Emirates later this week.
The UAE remains one of India’s key energy partners, and strengthening energy cooperation is expected to be an important agenda during the visit.
India continues to maintain strategic ties with both Iran and the UAE while carefully balancing its interests in the region amid rising tensions.
