Jharkhand cancels JSSC exam students celebrate Ranchi

Jharkhand cancels JSSC exam in a major concession to protesting students, with Chief Minister Hemant Soren announcing the cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) exam after weeks of sustained agitation in Ranchi.

Background — Weeks of Student Agitation

The cancellation comes after nearly 23 days of continuous protest by students under the banner of the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch. Demonstrators had accused the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission of serious irregularities in how the JSSC-CGL exam was conducted through an outsourced agency, TSR Data Processing Pvt Ltd (TDPL). Protesters had staged sit-ins, burned effigies, and threatened to gherao the Chief Minister’s residence as the agitation intensified through August, with several protesters eventually going on hunger strike to press their demands.

What the Government Announced

Soren confirmed that his government would cancel everything associated with TDPL, including the tests themselves, the results that were published, and the recruitment process tied to them. “Addressing all aspects of the issue, we have decided to cancel everything associated with TDPL,” Soren told reporters after a meeting with officials.

The decision directly answers one of the central demands of the JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch. Demonstrators had alleged serious irregularities in how the exam was conducted and pushed for a complete overhaul of both the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

Students Celebrate After Weeks of Agitation

The announcement came as six protesters continued an ongoing hunger strike, with a government panel preparing for another round of talks with the Reforms Manch. Visuals from Ranchi showed students celebrating and waving the Tricolour after the cancellation was confirmed.

Protester Savita Kumari, who had been on hunger strike, said the movement’s demands went beyond just cancelling the exam. “We want complete reforms in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), along with a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities and cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam,” she said.

A Counter-Protest Emerges

The cancellation, while celebrated by the original protesters, has triggered backlash from a different group — candidates who had already cleared the JSSC-CGL exam and secured government jobs through it. A group of successful candidates gathered outside the state secretariat, appealing to Soren not to cancel the examination and warning that the move would leave around 2,000 people jobless.

This has split public reaction into two camps: those who see the cancellation as accountability for alleged exam malpractice, and those who argue it unfairly punishes candidates who cleared the process in good faith.

Opposition Weighs In

The BJP has backed the original protesters’ demand for a CBI probe into the exam irregularities. Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi urged Soren to fully accept the students’ demands and questioned why the state government would resist a CBI investigation if it was confident the recruitment process had been conducted fairly.

Marandi also warned that continued inaction from the government could push more students and youth onto the streets, and extended his support to a fresh demonstration planned for August 20.

What Happens Next

With the JSSC-CGL and TDPL-conducted examinations now cancelled, the government has accepted one of the movement’s most significant demands. However, questions remain over how the roughly 2,000 candidates who had already secured jobs through the now-voided process will be compensated or accommodated, and whether the demanded CBI probe will move forward.

The government panel is expected to hold further talks with protest leaders in the coming days, as both the celebratory and opposing camps await clarity on next steps, with tensions likely to persist ahead of the planned August 20 demonstration.
